Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): How to Get Your Business Cited by ChatGPT

Quick answer: Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your content easy for AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, Gemini and Claude to find, trust and quote. In practice it means: let AI crawlers in, answer questions directly in the first lines of a page, back claims with specific numbers and sources, use clear structure (headings, lists, tables, FAQs), add structured data, publish an llms.txt, and get your brand mentioned on other credible sites. Good SEO is still the foundation; GEO is what decides whether you're cited or just indexed.

A client asked us recently why a competitor kept showing up when they asked ChatGPT for "best software house in Lahore for apps", while they didn't, despite ranking well on Google. The answer wasn't magic. The competitor's pages answered the question in plain sentences, had specifics an AI could quote, and were mentioned on other sites the AI already trusted. This guide is the checklist we now run on every site we build, including our own.

    Why GEO matters now

More and more buying research starts with a question to an AI assistant rather than a list of blue links. When the assistant answers, it typically cites a handful of sources, and citations are highly concentrated. Research summarised by Peec AI found that on Perplexity most URLs are never cited at all, while a small share of pages capture a large proportion of citations. Being one of those pages is a real competitive edge, especially for service businesses where one good lead can be worth a lot.

    SEO vs. GEO

    Traditional SEOGEO
GoalRank a page in search resultsBe quoted or cited in an AI answer
Unit of successPosition and clicksMentions and citations
What winsRelevance, links, technical healthClear answers, specifics, trust, structure

They aren't competitors. Live-search assistants (Perplexity, AI Overviews, ChatGPT search) lean heavily on pages that already rank and are well structured, so technical SEO remains the base layer.

    The GEO checklist we use

    1. Let the AI crawlers in

Check your robots.txt. If it blocks GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended or similar, those assistants can't read your pages. Decide deliberately which you allow. For a business that wants leads, allowing the search-and-answer bots is usually the right call.

    2. Answer first, then explain

Put a direct, two-to-four-sentence answer at the top of each page or post, the way this article starts. AI systems frequently extract definition-style statements, and readers appreciate it too. Then go deep.

    3. Be specific

"We build apps fast" gives an AI nothing to quote. "A lean ride-hailing MVP typically takes 3–4 months" does. Prices, timelines, ranges, named technologies, named places: specifics get cited, vague claims get skipped.

    4. Cite your sources

Link to the official notification, the study or the documentation behind your numbers. It builds trust with readers and gives AI systems confidence that your page is a reliable summary.

    5. Structure for extraction

Descriptive H2/H3 headings phrased the way people ask, short paragraphs, bullet lists, comparison tables and an FAQ at the end. Listicles and comparison formats perform especially well in AI answers.

    6. Add structured data

Organization, Service, Product or SoftwareApplication, Article, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList schema help machines understand who you are and what each page is about. Keep it accurate. Schema that contradicts the page does more harm than good.

    7. Publish llms.txt

llms.txt is an emerging convention: a plain-text map of your most important pages with one-line descriptions, served at /llms.txt, sometimes with a fuller /llms-full.txt. It's cheap to add and gives assistants a clean summary of your business. Our own site publishes both.

    8. Show real experience

Case studies with real screenshots, named products, concrete outcomes and the people behind the work. AI systems, like Google's quality guidelines, favour content that shows first-hand experience over generic rewrites.

    9. Get mentioned elsewhere

Assistants trust brands that other sources mention: directories, industry publications, partner sites, review platforms, communities and podcasts. Consistent name, address and description everywhere matters more than people think.

    10. Keep it fresh

Update key pages when facts change (prices, laws, versions) and show the "last updated" date. Stale numbers get dropped.

    How to measure GEO

    • Ask the main assistants the ten questions your customers ask, monthly, and note whether you're mentioned or cited.
    • Watch referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and similar in your analytics.
    • Add "How did you hear about us?" with an "AI assistant" option to your contact form.
    • Track branded search growth. AI mentions often lead to people Googling your name.

    Common mistakes

    • Blocking AI crawlers by accident through a security plugin or CDN setting.
    • Putting key content inside images, PDFs or heavy JavaScript that crawlers can't read.
    • Writing for keywords instead of questions.
    • Mass-producing thin AI content. It rarely gets cited and can drag the whole site down.
    • Expecting overnight results from model training. Live-search engines move in days; trained knowledge moves in months.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. GEO builds on SEO. Pages that are fast, crawlable and well ranked are the ones live-search assistants pick up first.

How long does GEO take to work?

For assistants that search the web live, changes can show up within days or weeks. For what models learn during training, expect months.

Should I allow GPTBot and ClaudeBot?

If you want AI assistants to recommend you, generally yes. If you publish content you don't want used for training, you can allow search and answer bots while blocking training-only crawlers.

    What is llms.txt?

A plain-text file at the root of your site that lists your key pages with short descriptions, written for AI systems to read.

Can you do GEO for my website?

Yes. We audit crawl access, structure, schema and content, then rewrite key pages answer-first and set up llms.txt and tracking. Get in touch for an audit.
